APRIL 11 – The Calgary Surge revealed their 2024 draft picks in the newly formatted CEBL Draft, the team announced Thursday. The Calgary Surge selected Dondre Reddick of St. Francis Xavier University as the 9th pick in the first round, who averaged 14.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 25.5 minutes in 72 games played over four seasons with the X-Men. The 6-foot-3 guard attended GTA Prep, an international basketball academy based in Brampton, Ontario and represented Nova Scotia on the U14, U15, and U16 provincial teams. “I am excited for this opportunity. It is an absolute blessing to be able to learn and compete in a professional environment this summer,” said Reddick. With the 2nd pick in the second round, the Surge selected Mike Demagus from McMaster University who averaged 13.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 25.4 minutes in 87 games played over four seasons with the Marauders. The 6’4 guard graduated from Thornlea High School and won Silver in the 2018-19 Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) high school championships. “Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of the team. With the 9th pick in the third round, the Surge selected Noah Wharton of the University of Calgary who averaged 13.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 28.8 minutes in 69 games over four seasons played with the Dinos. The six-foot guard won gold with Team Ontario at the 2017 Canada Games and was named to the Senior Division All-Star team when he attended St. Marcellinus High School. “Being a professional basketball player has always been a dream of mine so having the opportunity to start off my professional career with the Surge is something I’m very excited about and grateful for,” said Wharton. This year, the CEBL Draft expanded to three rounds with each club making three selections total (one in each round) of either returning or graduating Canadian post-secondary players. In total, 30 eligible players were selected. The priority of selection in round one was in the reverse order of how each team finished the 2023 regular season, and the following rounds reverted to a ‘snake format’ in reverse order of the previous round.
