APRIL 18 – Tyrell Vernon will be the next head coach of the Calgary Surge and lead the team for the 2024 season, the team announced Thursday.

 

Vernon just wrapped his third season as head coach of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men basketball program. He joined the X-Men and X-Women coaching staff as an associate coach in April 2019. He then succeeded long-time head coach (and Surge Senior Advisor) Steve Konchalski, as the head coach of the X-Men basketball program at the completion of the 2020-21 season. Vernon was named the 2023 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Coach of the Year and led the X-Men to the AUS Championship title and a U SPORTS silver medal.

 

“Tyrell is one of the most elite young coaches in our country,” said Surge Senior Advisor Steve Konchalski. “He has won at every level (including the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association, U SPORTS, and the Canadian Elite Basketball League) and we are fortunate that he has chosen the Surge to be a part of his coaching journey. He served as assistant coach for the Scarborough Shooting Stars for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He played a critical role in the Shooting Stars’ success with the team making Championship Final appearances in both years and winning the CEBL Championship in 2023 over the Calgary Surge. Vernon has also served as the head coach of the boys basketball team at TRC Academy, a prep school in Brantford, Ontario. During his tenure, the team realized many successes including winning back-to-back OSBA championships in 2018 and 2019. He was named 2019 OSBA Coach of the Year. “We are thrilled about the addition of Tyrell Vernon to the Calgary Surge. APRIL 15 – The Calgary Surge have signed six-foot-eight forward Gabe Osabuohien for the 2024 season, the team announced Wednesday. Osabuohien recently played with the Cleveland Charge of the National Basketball Association (NBA) G-League where he averaged 3.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.0 steals and 15.1 minutes in 52 games played. “We are thrilled to welcome Gabe Osabuohien to the Surge! This will be Gabe’s first season playing in the CEBL and he is eager to learn and get to work. We expect him to be a force on the defensive end,” said Surge General Manager, Shane James. “I have no doubt he can help us win.” The six-foot-eight forward from Toronto, Ontario graduated from West Virginia University where he averaged 4.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 18.1 minutes in 31 games played. Prior to his time in West Virginia, he played with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks where he averaged 3.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 18.5 minutes in 28 games played. “I am very excited to be a part of the team this season as this is my first time playing in the CEBL and visiting Calgary,” said Osabuohien. “I am thankful for the opportunity and excited to get to work. The Calgary Surge were notified this week that Coach Nelson Terroba has resigned to pursue a coaching opportunity in his home state of Texas. During his tenure as head coach throughout the Surge’s inaugural season, Coach Terroba led the team to a 12-8 record, a first-place finish in the 2023 CEBL Western Conference, and a 2023 CEBL Championship Final appearance. “Nelson played a pivotal role in the success of our first season. While this is a bittersweet moment for our organization, we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes in this next chapter of his career,” says General Manager Shane James. The organization wishes Coach Terroba nothing but the best as he takes on this new endeavour. It has been incredibly special to work with him and we are grateful for all of his contributions to the Surge and to the Calgary community. APRIL 11 – The Calgary Surge revealed their 2024 draft picks in the newly formatted CEBL Draft, the team announced Thursday. The Calgary Surge selected Dondre Reddick of St. Francis Xavier University as the 9th pick in the first round, who averaged 14.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 25.5 minutes in 72 games played over four seasons with the X-Men. The 6-foot-3 guard attended GTA Prep, an international basketball academy based in Brampton, Ontario and represented Nova Scotia on the U14, U15, and U16 provincial teams. “I am excited for this opportunity. It is an absolute blessing to be able to learn and compete in a professional environment this summer,” said Reddick. With the 2nd pick in the second round, the Surge selected Mike Demagus from McMaster University who averaged 13.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 25.4 minutes in 87 games played over four seasons with the Marauders. The 6’4 guard graduated from Thornlea High School and won Silver in the 2018-19 Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) high school championships. “Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of the team. I am excited to start learning and get better,” said Demagus. With the 9th pick in the third round, the Surge selected Noah Wharton of the University of Calgary who averaged 13.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 28.8 minutes in 69 games over four seasons played with the Dinos. The six-foot guard won gold with Team Ontario at the 2017 Canada Games and was named to the Senior Division All-Star team when he attended St. Marcellinus High School. “Being a professional basketball player has always been a dream of mine so having the opportunity to start off my professional career with the Surge is something I’m very excited about and grateful for,” said Wharton. This year, the CEBL Draft expanded to three rounds with each club making three selections total (one in each round) of either returning or graduating Canadian post-secondary players. In total, 30 eligible players were selected. The priority of selection in round one was in the reverse order of how each team finished the 2023 regular season, and the following rounds reverted to a ‘snake format’ in reverse order of the previous round. APRIL 3 – The Calgary Surge have signed six-foot-one guard Corey Davis Jr. for the 2024 season, the team announced Wednesday. Davis Jr. is currently playing professionally with the Vanoli Cremona of the Lega Basket Series A in Milan, Italy where he averages 14.0 points, 2.0 assists, and 23.5 minutes. “We are thrilled to welcome Corey Davis to our team. Corey epitomizes professionalism in every aspect. Being a born leader, his presence on the court is both inspiring and enjoyable to witness. His dynamic energy is sure to captivate and delight our fans in Calgary,” said Surge General Manager, Shane James. “In essence, Corey brings an electrifying spark to our team. MARCH 27 – The Calgary Surge have signed Malcolm Duvivier for the 2024 season, the team announced Wednesday. Duvivier is no stranger to the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), having signed as a free agent with the Fraser Valley Bandits (now Vancouver Bandits) in 2020. He called Vancouver home until the end of the 2023 season, where he averaged 10.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 25 minutes in 16 games played. “Malcolm is a veteran in this league now. He brings experience and leadership to our team, while being a versatile and tenacious defender that can disrupt the opposing team’s offensive flow.
